Campaigns calling for votes in the upcoming ward, district, provincial and municipal council election in Cambodia started on May 2 with the opposition party holding outdoor rallies in Kandal province, said a National Election Committee (NEC) leader.

According to NEC General Secretary Tep Nitha, four other participating parties, including the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) organised meetings in Phnom Penh and other localities nationwide.

NEC is considering the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP)’s request to hold rallies in Phnom Penh, he said, adding that the committee will also consult the Phnom Penh City Hall and the Standing Committee for election security.

CNRP’s leader in Kandal province Eng Chhay Eng, said after a vote campaign in the locality, the party President Sam Rainsy and Vice President Kem Sokha will meet supporters in Phnom Penh.

However, security in Democracy Square and other key locations in Phnom Penh is being tightened with a government decree banning gatherings after a deadly protest in January this year.

Tep Nitha explained that the election is not a universal vote, instead members of ward and commune councils will elect members for councils serving at higher levels.

Some local analysts have said that as a relatively minor election, the situation will not cause tension during the vote campaigns.

The campaigns will conclude on May 16, two days before the election takes place.-VNA
