(VOV) – Waste is sometimes more dangerous than corruption because that is not measured in reality, Party General Nguyen Phu Trong told Hanoi voters at a meeting on May 3.
Current regulations stipulate that those that cause a big waste will be duly penalised, and improvements have been made in a number of areas, he noted.
Thrift practice has been exercised in organising meetings and celebrations, and the fight must be intensified in the coming time, the Party leader said.
Trong was speaking amidst voter concerns about scattered investment in capital construction, especially the recent huge cost overrun of up to US$339 million of the Cat Linh-Ha Dong urban railway project.
Truong Duc Ngai, a resident of Cong Vi Ward, Ba Dinh district, said the overrun of the railway project is a big waste of national investment.
“I think waste is also a national threat,” Ngai said, citing many investment projects that have been abandoned or left unfinished for a long time due to capital shortages or other reasons.
“Voters do hope that the National Assembly will take immediate action to deal with rampant waste so that it will win more voter trust,” he said.
Party leader Trong appreciated voters’ proposals and vowed to report to the National Assembly in its upcoming session.
