Four people died and 21 were injured in a stabbing attack on Taipei’s subway yesterday, the first random killing in the system’s 18-year history, according to Taipei-based Central News Agency.
A second-year student at Tunghai University in Taichung is being questioned by the police, Central News Agency reported. The man received counseling earlier this month after administrators discovered sociopathic social media posts, CNA said, citing Lu Bing-kuan, a university official.
Two women and two men died, Taiwan’s Unique Television reported. TV broadcasts carried footage showing the suspect hurtling toward passengers wielding a knife and passengers trying to fend him off with their umbrellas. Armed guards and blood spatter were also visible on television.
President Ma Ying-jeou expressed “shock and heartbreak,” in an e-mailed statement, calling on police to devote all resources to their investigation. The government will increase police patrols to protect passengers, Ma said.
The stabbing began between the Longshan Temple and Jiangzicui stations on the border between Taipei and neighboring New Taipei City. New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu said in a statement that additional police have been deployed to ensure the safety of passengers.
The first line of the Taipei Metro system began operating in 1996, according to its website. Chu said yesterday’s incident was the first random killing on the public-transit system.
