HA NOI (VNS)— Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh paid tribute to the victims of a recent ferry disaster in the Republic of Korea (RoK) at the country’s embassy in Ha Noi yesterday.
Minh, who is also the Foreign Minister, extended his deep condolences to the bereaved families and expressed his hope that the RoK people and the families will soon regain stability in their lives.
In response, Ambassador Jun Dae Ju thanked the Vietnamese Government and people for their support to the RoK and the bereaved families.
On April 16, a five-storey ferry, named Sewol, capsized when carrying 476 crew and passengers, mainly high school students, to the popular holiday destination of Jeju Island. The incident has left many people dead and missing.
Minh and the ambassador also discussed other important regional and global issues. The Deputy PM noted that the Vietnamese people have recently protested against China’s illegal placement of an oil rig in Vietnamese waters. However, some extremists took advantage of the situation to cause disturbances and damage the property of some enterprises, including those of RoK investors.
He stressed that the Vietnamese Government had been taking strict measures to prevent such crimes and also penalise the violators, adding that Vietnam was taking every effort to facilitate and ensure the safety of foreign individuals and businesses operating in the country. — VNS
