An American actor, known for his musical about a U.S. boy band that became internationally successful in the mid-1960s, amazed a slew of young Vietnamese musical enthusiasts by teaching them numerous Broadway acting skills earlier this week in Ho Chi Minh City.
Veteran actor Jonathan Hadley, who has over 20 years of experience in performing on the Broadway stage, showed nearly 30 young Vietnamese, including students of the HCMC Conservatory of Music and other musical enthusiasts, such acting techniques as reading the scene, understanding the dialogue, and pronouncing words in different tones during a meeting at the American Center on April 29.
Participants also had a chance to play the roles in Hadley’s “Jersey Boys,” a well-known musical presented in a documentary-style format that is centered on The Four Seasons, a rock and pop band that overcame many difficulties to become one of the most successful groups in the world in the mid-1960s.
After touring many Asian countries including Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore, Hadley came to Vietnam in the hope of sharing his profound love of musicals and performing experience with the country’s young people.
“I want to meet students from different cultures and talk about musicals,” said the Broadway actor.
“Vietnam is a good market for musicals as the people usually go out at night, which is an important factor as they would be the audition’s audiences.”
Besides the famous musical “Jersey Boys” which was performed 230 times in the U.S. during six years, the actor also directed “Much Ado About Nothing,” a comedic play written by William Shakespeare, and “Tartuffe,” one of the most famous theatrical comedies by French writer Molière.
Both were already both performed in the U.S.
