Binh Duong authorities slapped two rioter with jail terms and are preparing to commence proceedings against the hundreds of suspects arrested following the riots that took place on May 13.
Le Van Nghiem, a worker at the Chan Viet Joint Stock Company, was sentenced to three years in jail following a public trial that attracted thousands of people in the province’s Ben Cat Town on Sunday.
On May 13, thousands of workers in Binh Duong gathered to protest the illegal operation of a Chinese drilling rig in Vietnam’s continent shelf and exclusive economic zone in the East Sea, also known as South China Sea.
The demonstration began peacefully but turned violent at noon when a number of individuals broke into industrial campuses and demanded that company leaders allow their workers to stop working and join the protests. Some took the chance to loot or set warehouses on fire.
According to the indictment, Nghiem joined a group of about 200 people who pulled down his employer’s gate on the evening of May 13, screaming about “chas[ing] the Chinese back to their country.”
When local militiamen arrived, Nghiem incited other people to insult and attack them.
Nghiem blocked and damaged a police car, believing that it belonged to the Chinese, and caused more than VND4 million (US$195) in damages. He was immediately arrested.
In court, Nghiem admitted to his crimes and said he regretted his actions.
The court sentenced Nghim to three years in jail for “causing public nuisance” and “deliberately damaging property.”
On the same day, another court in Binh Duong sentenced Chau Vinh Tuong to one year in jail for robbery.
Tuong was found guilty of stealing a computer screen, a wifi modem, a scanner, two computer mouses and a keyboard from the Cao Vien Company in Tan Uyen Town on May 13.
Police say he was seized while attempting to flee from a squad of company guards and local police. Relevant agencies say that the property he stole was worth more than VND5 million (US$237).
