“Our ancestors uphold a national protection tradition, from the remote mountainous areas to sea and islands,” said head of Quang Tri’s Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Executive Board Thich Thien Chuc in a ceremony to pray for peace on the East Sea following China’s illegal placement of the Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig in Vietnam’s waters.
On June 11, 4,000 Buddhists across Quang Tri province, together with local authorities organised the ceremony.
The ceremony reviewed the glorious history in defending the country from invaders.
Ceremony participants prayed for territorial integrity and peace on the East Sea, calling on China to stop aggressive actions and restore peace.
During the ceremony, Buddhists condemned China's unilateral action of illegally placing its Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig in Vietnam's continental shelf and exclusive economic zone. This action disregarded international opinion and violates the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Superior Buddhist monk Thich Thien Chuc raised the Buddhists' will and aspiration in the spirit of mercy and love of peace.
Peace and intelligence are central Buddhist tenets.
Over ninety million Vietnamese people showed their solidarity and support for the cause. The ceremony called on sharing with coast guards facing danger at the Paracel Archipelago and with fishermen's losses caused by China.
Buddhists across Quang Tri Province donated material support for the sea and islands protection process./.
