This year, the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien will have almost 40 public internet access points in localities according to the project to improve opportunities to use computers and access public internet in Vietnam.
Dien Bien is one of 12 provinces currently implementing the third step of the project in the second phrase. The provincial library, eight district libraries, 11 commune libraries and 17 commune-based post offices in Dien Bien have carried out the project.
The project is being controlled by the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Post Office and Provincial People’s Committees with an investment of over USD50.5 million, sponsored mainly by the US-based Bill & Melinda Gates Fund.
The project is to be implemented over five years from 2011 to 2016 at 400 province and district level libraries and 1,500 commune-based post offices in 40 provinces nationwide.
The project will provide and install more than 12,000 computers for access to the Internet and other additional equipment to 1,900 libraries and commune-based post offices. Training courses will be made available to approximately 2,000 librarians, managers and workers at libraries and post offices to improve the quality of service.
By October of this year, an additional 600 public Internet access sites will be established at 325 commune-based post offices and 276 libraries in 12 beneficiary provinces. By 2016, about 760,000 people in rural areas will benefit from the use of computers and Internet access through this project.
The information was released at a seminar which has been held by the Ministry of Information and Communication in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Dien Bien province./.
