The consumer price index (CPI) rose by 1.38 percent in the first half of this year, the slowest pace since 2002, according to the General Statistics Office.
Do Thi Ngoc, deputy chief of the office’s price division, told Tuoi Tre newspaper that CPI increased slowly, mainly because consumers have tightened their belts.
For instance, many of the goods measured by the index saw unremarkable price rises, while the price of others dropped, like telecommunication in June, she said.
According to the statistics office, Vietnam’s June CPI has risen 0.3 percent since May.
Most prices on consumer goods increased only slightly. Medicine and health services rose just 0.74 percent, housing and building materials 0.61 percent, foods and food services 0.28 percent, and education 0.01 percent.
Vietnam’s government has sought to keep CPI growth at 5 percent this year.
