Facing the risk of water shortages in the future, recently, under the sponsorship of Rockefeller Foundation (USA) , Da Nang city has implemented to assess the current status of surface water resource and present condition of management of this resource .
According assessment results, currently, the surface water resource of Da Nang is strongly affected by climate change and hydropower system. The current status of the flows in upstream river sharply declines, creating conditions for salinity intrusion in downstream river.
Besides, many experts said that: the management of surface water resource in Da Nang is inadequate, loose and asynchronous … Therefore; the surface water here is not effectively managed.
From these objective and subjective reasons above, it is forecasted that in the future, the city will face the situation of water shortages on a large scale, not only water for manufacturing would lack but also water resources for daily activities would be threatened.
Currently, Da Nang is continuing to assess the current status of surface water resource, the management and forecasting of the using demand of this resource. Thereby, propose appropriate solutions to manage; conduct detailed scenarios for water resource taking factors of climate change and urban development into account; determine thresholds and the risk index of flows of two major rivers in the city…. for timely intervention.
