(VOVworld) – Two large supermarket chains, owned by senior officials of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), were raided by Egyptian police Sunday and ordered to close.
The two chains, Zad and Seoudi, are owned by MB leader Khairat El-Shater and another senior MB official Abdel Rahman Seoudi. Zad and Seoudi’s branches will be transferred to the state-owned Egyptian Retail Corporation and are expected to re-open after completing inventories.
Since a coup ousted President Mohamed Morsi last year, Morsi’s party – the Muslim Brotherhood – has been ruthlessly suppressed. More than 1,400 MB supporters have been killed in clashes with Egyptian police and 16,000 members have been arrested.
