A hotel security guard died on Monday while trying to save a drowning tourist on the resort island of Phu Quoc in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang.
Nguyen Manh Dung, 51, of Hanoi and Nguyen Trong Ha, 33, security chief at a hotel, both perished in the water off Phu Quoc, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
Nguyen Minh Cong, another guard coming to the tourist’s aid, has been hospitalized after people in the area managed to draw him back with the help of some lifebuoys.
The 23-year-old said he and Ha jumped into the sea after hearing screams for help at around 9 a.m.
But the water was rough and they were just washed further offshore.
Last August, three tourists from Hanoi drowned while swimming in the sea in front of a hotel in Duong Dong Town, Phu Quoc.
Vietnam has been reporting regular fatal drownings recent years. While adults often die around beach resorts, children tend to perish in rivers and streams near their homes.
The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs announced, on Monday, that the country sees an average of nine fatal drownings among youths a day, the highest rate in Southeast Asia and ten times that of developed countries.
Nguyen Hai Huu, head of the childcare and protection department at the ministry, told Tuoi Tre that every locality can afford to invest in swimming education — even if that means setting up a protective net in a part of a pond.
