Irish officials made their commitment while receiving Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son during his visit on June 5-6.
Son met with Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Eamon Gilmore, Minister for Trade and Development Joe Costello, and Irish Aid General Director Brendan Rogers.
He thanked the Irish government for providing its official development assistance (ODA) to Vietnam’s socio-economic development and poverty reduction programmes, especially when Ireland has just ridden out the European public debt crisis.
Ireland has committed to providing continued ODA to Vietnam. It has worked closely with relevant Vietnamese ministries and agencies to develop its aid programme for Vietnam in the post-2015 period.
At these meetings, both sides expressed satisfaction at the strong development of bilateral relations, noting two-way trade has grown by more than 20% annually in recent years.
They agreed on measures to expand Vietnam-Ireland relations by increasing exchange visits, encouraging their business communities to invest in the areas of their strengths such as agriculture, food and dairy product processing, and telecommunications, and strengthening cooperation in education-training, and other potential areas.
Son briefed his hosts on China’s illegal placement of its floating oil rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 deep inside Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone, causing tensions in the East Sea, and Vietnam’s consistent policy of settling the territorial dispute through peaceful measures.
The Irish leaders welcomed Vietnam’s diplomatic solutions to the dispute, shared the EU’s common stance towards addressing the matter, and voiced strong support for Vietnam’s efforts in struggling against violations of international law.
During his stay, Son attended and delivered speeches at the fourth roundtable of leading EU and Asian economists, and the Asia-Ireland Trade and Investment Summit.
He introduced Vietnam’s recent Renewal achievements, its development and integration goals, and opportunities that European companies, including those from Ireland, can seize to develop their business strategies in Vietnam.
