On June 11, during a meeting to review 5 years of the campaign “Day for the Poor” and a launching ceremony of the “Fund for the Poor” in the northern province of Quang Ninh, agencies, enterprises, organizations and individuals donated VND5.4 billion as funding for the poor.
According to the Fatherland Front of the province, over the past 5 years, the provincial Fund for the Poor has deployed almost VND46 billion received from agencies, enterprises, armed forces, social organizations and individuals. The money has been spent building and repairing houses for close to 5,000 poor families, supporting over 2,000 families in boosting economic development, assisting hundreds of poor families in healthcare, giving support for thousands of poor students’ schooling fees, and giving emergency assistance to 3,000 others.
In addition, the fund has earmarked VND600 million to build houses for poor families in border areas and those in disadvantaged regions often struck by natural disasters.
Over the past years, Quang Ninh province has paid special attention to social welfare work and the improvement of people’s spiritual and material lives, with a focus on realising sustainable poverty reduction targets.
From 2009 to 2013, the poverty rate declined by 6.24%, making the province one of the six provinces and cities across the country reporting lowest poverty rates./.
