Son Tra banyan tree was recognized as Vietnam Heritage Tree by Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE) at the Son Tra Nature Reserve on June 8.
The 800 years old- banyan tree is located at the Son Tra Nature Reserve in Da Nang. According to experts, the original tree trunks and branches measured about 85 meters in circumference. The tree measured 22 meters in height.
In addition of its longevity, the tree was connected with historical and cultural features of the area where they grow.
In the early 19th century history, kings of Nguyen Dynasty established defensive forts here.
Moreover, Son Tra Peninsula was considered as an important revolutionary base for people of Da Nang during wars against the French and American invaders.
Nowadays, the banyan tree on Son Tra Peninsula has become an attractive destination for domestic and international tourists.
