Vietnam bags three gold medals at int’l Russian Olympic

Vietnamese students have recently won three gold medals at an international contest on Russian culture and poetry held in Russia, according to the Vietnamese General Department of Education Testing and Accreditation (GDETA).


The GDETA said Thursday that Vietnam garnered five medals, including three golds and two silvers, at the 2014 International Russian Olympic which took place in Moscow from June 6 to June 11.


The three gold medals went to Nguyen Ba Tri, a 11th grader at Hanoi – Amsterdam Specialized High School located in the Vietnamese capital, Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, another 11th grader enrolled at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted in Nam Dinh Province, and Do Anh Tung, a 12th-grade enrollee at Hanoi’s Nguyen Hue Specialized High School.



The two silvers belonged to Nguyen Phuong Trang, a 11th grader at Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School located in central Nghe An Province and Duong Hong Ngoc, a 12th grader at Nguyen Hue Specialized High School in the capital city.


The competition gathered over 200 contestants who are students from 29 countries around the world including Korea, Vietnam, the U.S., Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, and Bulgaria.


Besides joining cultural exchange activities, contestants also competed with each other in several categories such as presenting Western-related topics, pronouncing Russian words, and reading poets.


The quadrennial event, which aimed to celebrate the International Russian Language Day and the 215th birth anniversary of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, has been organized since 1972.


It was jointly held by the Pushkin Institute of the Russian Language and the International Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature and sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia in collaboration with the Russian World Fund.
