The Vietnam People’s Navy High Command handed over its DHC-6 hydroplane squadron to Air Brigade 954 on Tuesday and held a debut ceremony for the unit the same day.
The event was organized in Cam Ranh City of the south central province of Khanh Hoa, under the chair of Vietnamese Navy Deputy Commander, Rear Admiral Le Minh Thanh.
The squadron was established on September 5, 2013. Before being transferred to the Air Brigade, the unit had carried out many flights safely.
Previously, aircraft of the squadron were tasked by the Ministry of Defense with conducting a mission to Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago in the East Vietnam Sea, took part in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 plane, and attended many training courses, including those in Truong Sa.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rear Admiral Thanh said that the squadron will help enhance the combat capability of the Air Brigade.
The DHC-6 hydroplane has 19 seats for passengers, along with one or two for pilots. It can fly at an elevation of 2,000 meters at 307 kph.
The aircraft’s maximum duration of flying at an altitude of 3,000 meters is six hours and 51 minutes.
This kind of hydroplane, which is produced by Viking Air Ltd., a Canadian aircraft manufacturer, can take off or land on various surfaces, including soil, sand, ice, water, and swamp, Rear Admiral Thanh said.
