On May 28-29, the 5th Assembly of Global Environmental Facility (GEF) was hosted in Cancun city, Mexico. Vietnamese delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment.
The 5th Assembly of GEF was attended by the President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto, the CEO and Chairperson of GEF Naoko Ishii, ministers, high-ranking officials from more than 150 member countries, international organizations, civil social organizations and environment and climate change-related private sector in the world.
At the Assembly, participants reviewed and evaluated GEF’s operation efficiency of the 2010-2014 period and discuss action plan for the 2014-2018 period. During GEF has financed almost 900 projects for over 140 countries in the period of 2010-2014 with the total cost of US$ 3.7 billion in the areas of biodiversity, climate change, land degradation, persistent organic pollutants, international waters and sustainable forest management. Vietnam received US$ 58 million from GEF to support 28 national and regional projects during this period.
In the period 2014-2018, GEF will continue to support US$ 4.43 billion for global projects in such areas and broaden its reach to sustainable urban development and deforestation prevention by improving commodity supply chain, the sustainability and adaptability of food security in the Sub-Sahara region. Notably, the upcoming GEF projects will be conducted in the multi-disciplinary and multi-resource approach. Solutions to climate change challenge will be integrated into discussions of biodiversity, land degradation, sustainable urban systems. Improved distribution of financial resources for environmental and climate change problems is also in GEF’s strategy plan towards 2020.
In this working trip, Vietnamese delegation paid a courtesy visit to CEO and also Chairperson of GEF and met GEF Project Agencies in order to discuss GEF’s strategy plan in Vietnam in the future. During working sessions, Vietnamese delegation proactively gave constructive opinions that selecting right fields and implementing agencies helps to improve optimum efficiency of GEF’s projects in national and global scale.
