Vietnamese bartender ready to shake it up at global competition

Le Thanh Tung is named Vietnam’s Best Bartender of Year 2014 at the Diageo Reserve World Class South East Asia Finals.



A bartender from Ho Chi Minh City promises to introduce Vietnam’s lifestyle through his cocktails at a global competition to be held in the United Kingdom late next month.


Le Thanh Tung from the Chill Sky Bar becomes the only Vietnamese representative after being named the “Best bartender in Vietnam” at the Southeast Asia round of the Diageo Reserve World Class 2014 competition in Singapore mid-May.


Tung and five other best bartenders of Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia will demonstrate their skills at the Global Finals to take place in London from July 28 to August 1 with more than 40 competitors from the around the world.


Tung, a native of the central resort beach town of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province, said in the global competition he wants to introduce more about Vietnam through the cocktails representing nation’s lifestyle.


In the Southeast Asia round, Tung made great efforts to bring Vietnamese flavors in each of his cocktails. In the Ketel One Market Challenge, he boldly combine ingredient which seemed very simple but offered a unique taste in his exam.


“I decided to choose the materials closing to Vietnam. Herb helps us heal; lemongrass and basil are also indispensable ingredients in the cuisines of Vietnam every day.”


In the next round, he focused on introducing Vietnam’s tea drinking culture.


Asked why he chose Baby Corn cocktail for the Batch Signature round, Tung said the drink flavor “reminds me of my homeland Nha Trang and my childhood’s favorite dish. I mentioned this porridge through Baby Corn cocktail to introduce about my beloved country, Vietnam.”


Tung was the runner up at Diageo Reserve World Class Vietnam 2012 competition. A year later, he won the World Class Vietnam 2013.


The global competition, organized by the Diageo Group, aims to find bartender talents worldwide, and to contribute to the development of global tourism and service industry.


Stephane Gripon, general manager for Diageo Vietnam, said he was very proud of Tung’s performance at the 2014 World Class Bartender Southeast Asia and that he would become a good ambassador for Vietnam by introducing its culture and people to the world.
