Thanks to due attention, chess in Nam Sach (Hai Duong) is increasingly developing, favored by many children, forming a useful and healthy playground.

Nam Sach district’s chess playing movement has developed since 2010.

Chess is an intellectual sport, and the organization of chess playing is very easy. People play chess to practice thinking, patience, composure, and decisiveness; thus, it is very suitable to pupils.

To promote the movement, the district has directed the educational sector, communes, and the district town to pay attention to having chess taught at schools, especially at the primary level.

Previously, only some primary schools in the district taught chess, but to date 100% of the district’s primary schools have been teaching chess. Each school has formed 2 – 3 clubs.

Like other schools, Cong Hoa commune Primary School has had two chess clubs of grades 3 and 5 for several years, attracting the participation of over 60 pupils in the form of hobby clubs. The pupils learn to play chess once a week.

To create attractiveness to lure the participation of a large number of pupils, the school maintains the organization of tournaments in school years on the occasions of celebrating Vietnam Teachers’ Day (November 20) or the founding day of the Vietnam People’s Army (December 22). Additionally, the school’s clubs frequently have exchange competitions with several clubs of friend schools.

As a result, over the years, Nam Sach district’ chess team has continuously been among the top three teams when taking part in provincial tournaments.

Most typically, the district’s team in 2013 outdid many strong units to snatch the team trophy at the first provincial Juvenile and Junior Age Groups Chess Tournament for Hai Duong Newspaper Cup.

Determination to defend championship

The cultural house of An Xa hamlet, Quoc Tuan commune, is where the activities of Nam Sach district’s chess club take place.

When we came, more than a dozen of children were practicing playing chess under the instruction of coach Vu Dinh Hop. Many of them are members of the district’s team preparing to compete in the second provincial Juvenile and Junior Chess Tournament for Hai Duong Newspaper Cup 2014.

Participating in this year’s tournament, the district’s chess team has 16 athletes who will compete in all events of the tournament.

Based on the development achievements of pupils at schools, the district Center for Culture, Information, and Sports at the end of May made a list to summon 20 athletes for concentrated practice to get a good lineup.

The team practiced thrice a week on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. It regularly held cross competitions for quality assessment and outstanding athlete selection.

Vu Dinh Hop, coach of Nam Sach district’s chess team, said the cadre of the district’s current lineup are the athletes engaging in last year’s tournament, some once won first prizes, such as Tran Manh Duong, Le Thi Khen, and Bui Thi Thuy Duong.

The Hai Duong Newspaper’s participation in organizing the tournament in the past two years has contributed to heightening the value of rewards and had a positive effect of encouraging the locality to send the squad to the tournament. The athletes entitled to take part also uphold the spirit of responsibility and are more enthusiastic.

At this year’s tournament, the district’s chess team will try to successfully defend its championship.
