The Vietnam Book of Records (Vietkings) has recognised a 106-year-old man and his 100-year-old wife as the oldest living couple in Vietnam.

Cao Vien and Vu Thi Hai are farmers residing in a rural village in the north-central province of Nghe An.

They have three sons and five daughters, six of whom are still alive. The six are all over 60 years old.

The couple has a total 34 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Both of them are still in good health, according to Vietkings. They are still listening to radio and reading newspapers.

Vien said he married Hai when he was 24. When asked about the key to a long life, Vien and Hai said longevity and health are “god-given.”

“Honestly, we lived through difficult times when we just survived day by day, and we didn’t think we could live this long,” Vien said.

According to him, “living in peace and following moral principals” and taking exercise regularly help them stay healthy.

Vietkings said it will ask the Asia Book of Records and the Guinness World Records to present the title of oldest living couple to Vien and Hai.

It said the world has recorded the oldest living man or woman, but it is rare to have couples who are both more than 100 years old.
