PANO – The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has handed over 25 sets of SeaGateway communication devices, to fishermen in Quang Ninh province.

The devices were the donations of the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) in response to the “Connecting the East Sea” campaign launched by MIC, the Vietnam Red Cross, Vietnam Television and Voice of Vietnam.

The SeaGateway system will be installed on trawlers enabling fishermen to keep contact with the mainland via calling, messaging, transmitting data. The device can also allow the device carrier to be positioned within a distance of 100 kilometers. The service cost is as cheap as an average cell phone service.

Apart from the above donation, VNPT staffers sent texts to raise fund for fishery trade unions, fishermen, law enforcement forces who are working at sea and bravely safeguarding national sovereignty over sea and islands. By June 30th, 2014, the VNPT staffers sent nearly 52,000 SMSs, raising VND 72 million, and donated over VND 1.6 billion in cash to assist those forces.

Notably, in early July, Vinaphone-VNPT launched a preferential package named “Sea and Islands” for coastal fishermen, enabling them to have an access to updated information on aquaculture, support policies, working models of fishermen, new technologies, and weather forecasts.
