HA GIANG (VNS) – Ha Giang Province maintained GDP growth at a steady 10.35 per cent during the 2011-13 period, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said yesterday.
Trong said this was done while keeping economic restructuring on the right tract. The contribution of the services sector was 36.3 per cent, industry 25.9 per cent – and the forestry-seafood-agricultural sector, 37.8 per cent.
The Party leader was speaking during a working visit to the mountainous northern province.
Trong also noted that the proportion of poor households in Ha Giang had decreased from 41.8 per cent in 2010 to 26.95 by the end of last year while the average annual income per head has increased to nearly VND15 million (US$714).
He said such progress was made despite the province’s limitations in infrastructure and natural resources as well as the existing low educational background of the people.
The province’s achievements also included industrial production of nearly VND3.2 trillion ($152.38 million) last year, double the figure for 2010 and an increase of 58.3 per cent compared to the State’s target.
Another achievement was in tourism. More than 410,000 tourists visited the province during the first eight months of this year, equal to the total number for last year.
Trong attributed this to the beauty of the Dong Van Stone Plateau and the prioritisation of key strategies in infrastructure development.
He said he appreciated the difficulties facing the province, including its mountainous terrain, limited resources, and small-scale economy. Despite all the obstacles, he said the province had drawn lessons from the past and constantly endeavoured to overcomes difficulties to make progress.
Trong also said that for further industrialisation and modernisation, Ha Giang should focus on developing the forestry-agriculture sector by applying advanced technologies in production, seeking export opportunities through processing and looking at the way plants and animals are farmed.
He also said there was a need to foster traditional plants that had become local specialties, such as the Bac Quang orange and Ha Giang tea.
He added that industrial development, especially in mineral expoitation and processing, must keep pace with modern technology and in line with environmental protection.
He said Ha Giang should also focus on taking advantage of the its potential for border trade by boosting commercial exchange with the neighbouring Chinese provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi.
Trong noted that in preparation for the upcoming Party Congress, Ha Giang needed to strengthen its Party and political system, aiming at preventing corruption and waste.
He added that appointments to the provincial Party body should be implemented strictly according to State guidelines, making sure that the most suitable and talented people were elected. – VNS
