Nhan Dan Online – A text messaging drive to raise funds for Vietnamese Agent Orange (AO)/dioxin victims was officially launched nationwide on August 4.

The charity campaign, the fourth of its kind, held in response to the Day for AO victims (August 10), runs from August 1 to September 30. Each message sent to 1400 will result in a donation of VND18,000 (US$0.85) for AO victims.

VAVA is attempting to realise the goal of building 46 boarding homes and 1,160 social houses; granting 2,320 scholarships to child victims; and building three rehabilitation and nursing centres in the northern, central and southern regions with a total cost of over VND250 billion (US$11.7 million), Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange/dioxin (VAVA) Lieut. Gen Nguyen The Luc said.

Over the past three years, the programme has received more than 500,000 text messages worth over VND10 billion, which was spent on building care centres and houses for the victims, he said.
