Advertorial – Jang Hye Sung has been selected as Deputy Secretary-General of The Hague Model United Nations (THIMUN).
THIMUN Singapore, one of the world’s three biggest MUNs, selected a student from the Renaissance International School Saigon as its Deputy Secretary-General. Jang Hye Sung is the honoured recipient of this designation.
THIMUN is an international meeting of the minds that has been organized for years by high schools and universities throughout the world. At the conference, the selected students act as representatives of various countries to the United Nations and discuss global issues. THIMUN Singapore selected Jang Hye Sung as its Deputy Secretary-General for the conference in November, 2014.
Congratulations on becoming the Deputy Secretary-General of THIMUN Singapore 2014, Jang Hye Sung. What did you do to prepare yourself for a Deputy Secretary-General appointment?
I participated in a total of 15 MUNs organized around the world, so perhaps I am now the most experienced at MUN in Vietnam. I believe the tradition of the MUN Club at Renaissance International School Saigon contributed to my achievement. The club has attracted and trained many individuals in public speaking and debating after they participated in similar activities when they were younger.
Unlike other schools, Renaissance enables students to begin preparations when they are seven years old and continues support as they progress through school. The students acquaint themselves with and participate in public speaking and debating at the MUN Club.
Thanks to this, Renaissance representatives to MUNs make a good impression on the organizers. I am sure this is the reason I was chosen by THIMUN Singapore.
How did you feel when you were told about your important new assignment?
I cannot remember exactly what my feelings were when I received the email from THIMUN Singapore because it was such a big surprise. I must admit I’m nervous thinking about my upcoming role. I am, however, feeling happy and proud to have realized such a great achievement. I also want to say that, though I have the honour of being selected for this position, I don’t think I am better than my classmates. They all have their own strong points.
What inspired you to take part in the MUN activities?
My major is history. Therefore, I read many interesting speeches made by renowned global leaders, and I hoped, some day, I would be like them if I tried my best. Naturally, success also requires luck and opportunities, but I believe that I can achieve it if I really work hard.
What is your responsibility as Deputy Secretary-General of THIMUN Singapore 2014?
I will assist in chairing and coordinating a MUN with 2,000 fellow students in attendance. I will coordinate directly with the Chairman of every committee at this MUN. This will be a significant challenge to me because THIMUN Singapore will be one of the biggest MUNs in the world. There will be a lot of work, but I realize it is an honour being the sole representative of Vietnam and with an important role as the THIMUN Secretary-General.
How did your teachers support you?
At Renaissance, I had many opportunities to exercise my leadership and communication skills in various events organized by our school. Apart from MUNs organized in coordination with other international schools, we also take part in extracurricular activities, like charity, sports, and other outdoor activities. All these enabled me to develop my skills.
Furthermore, my teachers are people with experience in various fields and have travelled to many places in the world. They are my inspiration every day. They linked me to opportunities like MUN which in a normal environment I may not have access to. Last year, a student from the leading team at THIMUN Singapore was recruited by Harvard, thanks to the MUN activities. I believe I can achieve that, as well.
