At 8am on August 17th, while diving in the area 270 nautical miles off Phan Vinh Island of Truong Sa archipelago, Hien could not breath due to his breathing tube clogged up. He tried to emerge and was brought back to the trawler. Some minutes later, he lost his consciousness.

At 11am on August 18th, he was hospitalized on Phan Vinh Island. Lieutenant Colonel Vu Hong Quang, head of Phan Vinh Island, directed health personnel of the island infirmary to give emergency aid to the fisherman.

10 hours of intensive care helped bring him round.

The success in saving Hien’s life proved professionalism of the military medical staffers on Phan Vinh Island, and helped tighten military-civilian ties.
