(VOV) – Midfielder Van Son’s only goal helped U19 Vietnam overwhelm U19 Thailand in a dramatic match of the ASEAN Youth Football Championship in Brunei on August 20, earning them a ticket to the final game against Myanmar.

Thailand that lost four key payers for injuries and red cards performed better Vietnam in the first 10 minutes, controlling the tempo and repelling their rivals’ attacks.

Shortly after that, Vietnamese players regained momentum, taking control of the game and jeopardizing Thai chances.

From the 17th to 21st minutes, Vietnamese players had three scoring chances, but Van Son and Quang Hai could not make the Thai goalkeeper surrender.

Several minutes into the second half, Vietnam had a big advantage when they only played with 10 Thai players after the captain received the second yellow card.

Guillaume Graechen’s players still dominated the game, yet they found it difficult to storm into the penalty box.

Without the captain, Thai men mostly played in their home turf and launched lightning counterattacks. Some made fouls and Vietnam’s Quang Hai had to leave the field after being fouled by a Thai player.

In a sudden free kick, Xuan Truong passed the ball to Van Son who ventured down and slotted in. The ball touched two Thai players and was then deflected into the net on 71 minutes.

After the goal, Vietnamese players slowed down and no more goals were scored in the last minutes of the game.

Vietnam will play U19 Myanmar that crushed Malaysia 3-0 in another semi-final.
