HCM CITY (VNS)- Construction began on Thursday on a 1,500-bed General Hospital in the southern province of Binh Duong.

The hospital, to be the largest in the province and operational by 2016, will be located in Dinh Hoa Ward in the centre of Thu Dau Mot City. Total floor space will be more than 167,000 square metres.

The 18-storey hospital, which includes a five-storey section, two 13-storey sections and a basement, was funded with VND2.3 trillion ($108.6 million) from the State budget.

As one of several key projects in Binh Duong Province, the hospital is expected to improve healthcare in the province as well as surrounding areas.

The province is currently drawing up a plan to offer advanced training to medical staff, including doctors, nurses, technicians and other staff at the hospital.

The hospital has state-of-the art facilities, including central ventilation, internet access, information technology and security systems, and elevators.

Tran Van Nam, vice chairman of Binh Duong People’s Committee, said the province’s existing General Hospital, which has a capacity of only 1,000 beds, and the equipment is old and in poor condition, cannot be expanded.

The few existing hospitals in the province are often overloaded with patients, he added. – VNS
