Ho Chi Minh City customs officials seized more than 40 kilograms of elephant tusks from a consignment that originated in Africa.

The 59 hunks of ivory were wrapped in tinfoil to avoid detection and hidden in cashew nuts, according to Tan Son Nhat Airport customs.

The customs agency said Sunday that the consignment, declared as cashew nuts, was smuggled from “an African country” and routed through several countries before arriving in Vietnam. The sender was described only as C.F and the receiver as the V.T.T.H. company.

They estimated the ivory’s market value at over VND2.4 billion (US$113,200).

The customs agency is investigating the case.

Tan Son Nhat Airport customs seized more than 300 kg of ivory in six cases so far this year, for a total value of about VND18 billion.
