Di An Commune police brought charges against a mother and step-father of the little girl for intentionally causing injury to others.
Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang and Do Trong Minh
On September 10, the girl’s mother, Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang, used a long stick to beat Ngan because she was playing with the stove. Hearing the commotion, Do Trong Minh went down and beat Ngan about the face.
They forced Ngan to kneel until midnight. Even after the severity of her injuries became apparent, Trang went to work as usual. The little girl was rescued by neighbours and taken to hospital.
Trang said that she was pregnant when when she divorced her ex-husband. She met Minh and gave birth to Ngan a year later with no new marriage registration or birth certificate.
However, results from the investigation showed that Trang already had two children when she was with her husband. When they parted, Trang brought Ngan with her. Ngan’s biological father provided their family record book as evidence in the case.
The issue of Ngan’s custody is still unclear. Her maternal grandmother wants the custody, but Colonel Nguyen Huu Cong, deputy head of police in Di An Commune, said they would have to verity the family record book and conduct a DNA test if necessary.
Attorney Nguyen Kieu Hung said that if Minh is not the real father, Ngan would be placed in the custody of her biological father. Ngan’s mother would also have limited custody.
