One more soldier succumbed to multiple injuries on September 2, raising total death toll to 20, nearly two months after a fatal helicopter crash in Hanoi.
Lieutenant Nguyen Hoang Anh, 33, of the commando battalion 18 died to severe burn, multiple injury shocks and kidney failure, according to the National Institute of Burns in Hanoi.
Anh was among 21 soldiers aboard the military chopper that crashed in Hanoi during a routine training flight on July 7.
He was taken to the burns institute with 52 percent burned skin and respiratory burn, brain injury and a broken leg.
However, he succumbed to injuries after nearly two months despite being treated with best equipment and doctors’ efforts, doctors said.
The last survivor in the crash is lieutenant Dinh Van Duong, 29, who is being treated at the National Institute of Burns for multiple injuries and burns.
Earlier, the accident happened at around 7:50 a.m. on July 7 when a Russian-made MI-171 chopper from Regiment 916 fell out of the sky with 21 people on board, including three crew members, two trainers, and 16 soldiers, during a parachuting exercise.
Sixteen people died on the spot, two others succumbed to injuries at the hospital shortly later, leaving three survivors being treated intensively at the burns institute before Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Van Tuan passed away on July 19.
On July 11, Major-General Nguyen Kim Cach of the Air Defense and Air Force Service, told local media that one of the helicopter’s two engines experienced the loss of power shortly after take-off from Hoa Lac military airport in Hanoi’s Ba Vi District.
Because the helicopter had not yet reached altitude and there was not enough time for the second engine to compensate for the power loss, the helicopter went down, he said.
