Hanoi to host ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting next week

Hanoi will, for the first time, host the ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting on September 15. Attendees will discuss measures to strengthen cooperation for better healthcare in ASEAN from 2015 onwards, a senior Vietnamese official has said.



The event will draw about 200 representatives of ASEAN member states, ASEAN+3 ( Japan, China and the Republic of Korea), the ASEAN Secretariat, and the United Nations, amongst others, said Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long at a press conference in Hanoi on Thursday, the Vietnam News Agency reported.



The top item on the agenda at the meeting, which is held once every two years on a rotational basis, will be ways to address non-contagious diseases and enhance multi-sector cooperation on infectious diseases.


Participants will also discuss sustainable financing options for combating HIV/AIDS and new contagious diseases, increasing health insurance coverage, and policy responses to aging at four sideline meetings.


Deputy Minister Long emphasized that the event provides a chance for Vietnam to increase its standing in the region and present the achievements it has made in the health sector.


The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
