Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang has banned sleeper buses travelling on dangerous routes in mountainous areas throughout Viet Nam.
The ban was issued after a bus plunged into a 200-metre ravine on Monday night, killing at least 12 people. The accident occurred on the way from Sa Pa Town to Lao Cai City in northern mountainous Lao Cai Province.
The minister said sleeper buses were not designed for travelling on steep routes.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, but it is believed the buses are tall and can easily lose their centre of gravity on difficult terrain.
