The 2014 Da Nang International Marathon, which took place in Da Nang City on August 31, attracted 3,600 people, including 600 professional runners from 27 countries and territories and around 3,000 amateur participants.

The competition included a full marathon (42km), a half marathon (21km), and a 5-kilometer fun run.

In the women’s 42km marathon, the first prize went to Vietnamese runner Hoang Thi Thanh, while Anette Haudran from Denmark was the runner-up, and Jacinta Louise from Australia won the third prize.

Vietnamese athlete Phung Thi Hang was the champion of the women’s half marathon, while the second and third prizes were awarded to Hiromi Uekuma from Japan and Aneta Radaczewska from Finland, respectively.

Vietnamese men grabbed every prize in both the full and half marathon categories.

Tran Van Loi, Hoang Nguyen Thanh and Nguyen Van Long won the three highest prizes in the 42km category; while Do Quoc Luat secured the top spot in the 21km run, followed by Le Van Tuan and Bui The Anh.

The 5km fun run, which was held at 7:00 pm, aimed at raising awareness for cancer patients.

It attracted some 3,000 amateur participants, including students, office workers, and local and foreign tourists.

Besides encouraging people to participate in sport and community activities, the event was also considered a chance for Da Nang to promote its tourism and culture.

Thanks to the marathon, Da Nang has become the 97th member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

Runners who took part in the marathon will be recognized by AIMS, and they will be able to apply for other famous marathons around the world.

The marathon was held for the first time last year, when it welcomed around 300 professional and amateur runners.
