A passenger plane operated by privately-owned carrier VietJet Air had to return to Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi when its landing gear failed to retract after taking off from the airport on Monday.

According to its schedule, Fight VJ8667 was to depart from Hanoi at 11:40 am on September 1 and arrive in Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 1:45 pm.

However, 30 minutes after takeoff, the crew of the Airbus A320 decided to get back to Hanoi as they were unable to retract the landing gear because its hydraulic system was malfunctioning.

The aircraft returned to Noi Bai at 1:05 pm.

VietJet Air arranged for a number of passengers on board to be flown to Ho Chi Minh City on another plane at their request.

The airline provided food and drinks to the passengers who decided to wait in the terminal for the plane to be inspected before taking off again.

After technicians checked and repaired the hydraulic system of the landing gear, the plane departed Noi Bai at 4:10 pm.

VietJet Air, whose full name is VietJet Aviation Joint Stock Company, is a low-cost private airline that has operated in Vietnam since late 2007.

Another landing gear-related incident occurred in Vietnam last year, when it was discovered that a Vietnam Airlines ATR-72 plane was missing one of its front wheels after landing at Da Nang International Airport on October 21.

The aircraft had left Cat Bi airport in the northern city of Hai Phong.

After all 41 passengers and the crew had exited the aircraft, airport technicians carried out a routine examination and found that one of the two front wheels was gone.

Further examinations showed that the aircraft’s front landing gear were broken on one side, leading to the loss of the wheel.

This was the first incident of its kind to have happened to Vietnam Airlines, according to Le Truong Giang, a company spokesman.
