Textile and garment exports yielded US$13.65 billion in the first eight months this year, an increase of about 20 percent over the same period last year, reported the Export-Import Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
In August, the turnover hit US$2.2 billion, up 0.2 percent against the previous month and 21 percent over the same month last year.
However, reality shows that despite of high turnover, value added of the textile and garment industry is rather low because companies have to import too many materials.
The industry is able to supply one percent of cotton and over 20 percent of fabric. Only 30 percent of locally-made fibre output are qualified enough for production.
