Two Australian passengers were arrested for making an idle terrorist threat while boarding a Vietnam Airlines flight from Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday.

Flight VNA780 carrying 207 passengers was scheduled to depart Melbourne at 10:35 a.m. but was delayed for 25 minutes due to a security check.

According to Vietnam Airlines, during the boarding process a flight attendant heard Luckham J. Y. say about another passenger, Puddy R.A.: “Don’t let this guy board, he is a terrorist!”

The flight crew asked airport security to arrest the two passengers and conduct a safety check of the plane, which revealed no threat.

The passengers were handed over to Australian Federal Police.

Last month, a Vietnam Airlines passenger was fined VND10 million (US$491) for making a joke about a bomb shortly before takeoff at Cat Bi Airport in the northern city of Hai Phong.

On August 5, Nguyen Van Tuan, 38, of Quang Ninh Province reportedly told airport security officers that there was a bomb in his wallet during check-in on a Ho Chi Minh City-bound flight.

The officers immediately apprehended Tuan and brought him to an isolated area. They evacuated other passengers from the lounge and checked the surrounding area.

No bomb was found.
