Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a plan to develop and recognize 25-30 geological parks across the country until 2030.
Under the plan, conservation will begin this year and be carried through 2020 in 37 cities and provinces.
It will conduct scientific research to preserve, develop and manage geological parks and improve relevant regulations on the preservation and exploitation of geological heritage sites in Vietnam as well as strengthen international cooperation in the field.
The plan also aims to establish a scientific criteria and processes to define, evaluate, categorize and recognize geological heritage.
In the first six years, Vietnam will build and recognize 5-7 national geological parks and nominate 2-3 to the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) for recognition.
In 2010, UNESCO recognized the Dong Van Stone Plateau in Vietnam’s northern province of Ha Giang as a member of the Global Network of National Geoparks (GGN).
Vietnam is seeking similar recognition for Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh, Cat Ba Islands in Hai Phong, Ba Vi National Park in Hanoi, Cuc Phuong National Park, Trang An and Hoa Lu old capital in Ninh Binh, Hoang Lien – Sa Pa National Park in Lao Cai and Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh.
