Ministry of Justice shows commitment to address violence against women

(CPV) – Ministry of Justice and UN Women signed a Letter of Agreement on a project to strengthening justice system through capacity building and legal review in relation to violence against women in Hanoi on Octoober 30th 2014.


Ms. Dang Hoang Oanh, Director of Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Justice (MOJ) and Ms. Shoko Ishikawa, UN Women Country Representative signed the Letter of Agreement on behalf of their organizations.


The signing ceremony gathered about 30 participants from the Department of Criminal and Administrative Laws, the Judicial Academy, the Department of General Affairs in Legal Development, the Department of International Law, The Ministry’s Office, The Department of Organisation and Personnel and the Department of International Cooperation and UN Women staffs.


Opening the signing ceremony, Ms. Dang Hoang Oanh, Director of Department of International Cooperation of MOJ said that ” The project is very important. It helps to strengthen Viet Nam’s justice system in controlling and preventing violence agaisnt women that contributes to complete targets of the National Strategy on Gender Equality 2011-2020 and to the implementation of the Convention on All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)”.


“This partnership builds on the Ministry of Justice and UN Women’s mutual recognition of challenges that survivors of violence against women face when trying to access justice. Through this cooperation, UN Women will assist the Department of Criminal and Administrative Laws of MOJ in strengthening the Penal Code and Penal Procedure Code with a particular focus on violence against women, and enhancing the capacity of judicial actors to handle violence against women through collaboration with the Judicial Academy of MOJ” said Shoko Ishikawa, UN Women Country Representative.


The project “Strengthening justice system through capacity building and legal review in relation to violence against women” was approved by Minister of MOJ by Decision No. 2890/QD-BTP on 29 October 2014. The project also receives support from Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada and is part of an ongoing UN Women effort with partners to mainstream gender in laws./.
