UN continues to help VN combat against HIV/AIDS

VGP – National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung and Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan on October 24-25 received Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the Joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Michel Sidibé in Ha Noi.


Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung asked for the UN’s further support to help Viet Nam eliminate AIDS pandemic by 2030.


The NA Chairman praised the UNAIDS’s efforts to build HIV/AIDS prevention strategies at global level and expressed his gratitude for its assistance to Viet Nam’s fight against the disease.


As the Law on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Combat was put in place, an important legal foundation was created, helping ensure people’s equal access to social welfare, as well as HIV/AIDS preventive services and treatment, he stated.


He went on to say that the country is utilizing available resources to speed up its combat against HIV/AIDS and support people with HIV/AIDS.


Michel Sidibé applauded Viet Nam for being the first announcing the implementation of the 90-90-90 target, which includes increasing to 90% the proportion of people living with HIV who know their diagnosis, increasing to 90% the proportion of people living with HIV receiving antiretroviral treatment, and increasing to 90% the proportion of people on HIV treatment who have an undetectable viral load.


He expressed his belief that with the adopted Law on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Combat, Viet Nam will reap more fruits in this fight.



Earlier on October 24, the UN official met with Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan.


Welcoming Mr. Michel Sidibé, the Vice President emphasized that Viet Nam has demonstrated its strong political commitment to speeding up HIV/AIDS prevention and carrying out a national strategy on the fight with the participation of the entire political system.


The country has also exerted efforts to ensure equal access by all people to social welfare, medical care as well as HIV/AIDS preventive services and treatment, which is highlighted in the revised Constitution 2013, she added.


The Vice President asked the UN Under-Secretary-General on HIV/AIDS to continue encouraging international organizations to assist Viet Nam in eliminating the pandemic by 2030 with priority given to preventive intervention measures and antiretroviral (ARV) drug and Methadone treatment.


Michel Sidibé congratulated Viet Nam on its achievements in the fight against HIV/AIDS.


He expressed his belief that Viet Nam will play an active role at the UN General Assembly to ensure that HIV/AIDS pandemic remains in attention as one of sustainable development goals after 2015.


The UN Under-Secretary-General said that his visit’s objective is to strengthen HIV/AIDS prevention programs in Viet Nam as well as to seek both domestic and international resources to help the country achieve the goals launched by the UN.
