UN Under-Secretary-General visits health centre for HIV services in Hanoi

NDO – Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé visited the Nam Tu Liem District Health Centre in Hanoi on October 24, together with Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long and delegates of the UN country team. >> Vietnam appreciates UN’s support in HIV/AIDS prevention


Addressing the working session, Michel Sidibé praised Vietnam’s efforts and achievements in preventing and combating HIV, expressing his wish that those efforts would be strongly accelerated in the future.


He asked for commitments from the Vietnamese government and Ministry of Health on the implementation of the UNAIDS 90-90-90 strategy, which seeks to achieve the following goals: 90% of all people living with HIV knowing their HIV status, 90% of all people with HIV receiving sustained antiretroviral therapy, and 90% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy having durable viral suppression.


The UN Under-Secretary-General affirmed that UN agencies in Vietnam would constantly stand by the country in its fight against HIV/AIDS. He also called on international organisations to enhance their support of Vietnam in obtaining UN Millennium Development Goals by 2015 and 90-90-90 goals in order to eliminate the HIV/AIDS pandemic by 2030.


The Nam Tu Liem District Health Centre is specialised in HIV-related services, including HIV testing, counseling and peer education. The centre also distributes condoms, clean needles and syringes, and methadone maintenance therapy.
