(VOV) -On the 20th anniversary of Ha Long Bay’s recognition as a World Natural Heritage site (1994-2014), Katherine Muller-Marine, chief representative of UNESCO in Vietnam, has nothing but high praise for the management board.

“In recent years, the board has made exceptional progress in conserving the bay, and has taken great care to manage the negative risks that tourism, construction and aquaculture pose,” Muller-Marine said.

They have also done a remarkable job at managing the risks associated with climate change and the development of a fishery village and aquaculture activity in the province, she added.

Ha Long Bay is the perfect example of how a unique ecosystem should be preserved, the UNESCO chief representative said.

Muller-Marine also underscored the need to raise public awareness of the importance of heritage preservation and encouraging younger generations to uphold and protect the value of the bay for its broader aesthetic, biodiversity, leisure and cultural values.
