Police in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong have arrested the former director of the provincial lottery company and two other government officials for violations involving billions of dong the company reportedly invested in a football field and club.
Thai Khac Ngo, 58, former director of the state-owned Lam Dong Lottery Company was seized at around 8 am Wednesday at his home on Phu Dong Thien Vuong Street in Da Lat–the provincial capitol.
Investigators combed his house for three hours, while local authorities and Nguyen Duc Viet, deputy director of the company, bore witness.
At around 11 am Ngo was escorted to his office on Ho Tung Mau Street where police continued their search for evidence.
On the same day, police arrested Luong Huu Duc, 44, chief accountant and Tran Kim Nghia, 56, former director of the company’s football club. Nghia currently serves as the general secretary of the Lam Dong Football Federation.
The trio all faced charges of “deliberately violating state regulations causing serious consequences.”
Police say the arrested were involved in the company’s investment in non-core business from 2011-2012 and that they used VND62 billion (US$2.9 million) to build a football field and a club which caused losses, news website VnExpress reported.
Ngo has been the company director for more than ten years. He was suspended in May but remained the chief of the company’s Communist Party Unit.
