(VOV) – Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked local authorities to fully tap Phu Quoc island district’s potential to turn it into a regional and international tourism centre.
He said attention should be paid to combining economic development and the defence of national sovereignty and mobilizing all resources to develop a modern and synchronized infrastructure for Phu Quoc to make it a green and clean urban area.
Deputy PM Phuc made the statement at a ceremony on November 15 to announce the Prime Minister’s decision to recognize Phu Quoc island district in the southern province of Kien Giang as the second tier city.
The Deputy PM emphasized that Phu Quoc is located in the centre of South East Asian region and on the Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand marine economic corridor. It has great potential for economic development, especially tourism and marine economy. It also has a strategic position in national defense and security. Therefore, the Party and State has always paid a special attention to develop Phu Quoc in a comprehensive manner over the years.
He noted that the island district has made great strides in developing tourism, upgrading infrastructure and improving service quality to deserve a second-tier city in recent years.
Deputy PM underlined that the province should co-ordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to check the master planning of Phu Quoc island district, monitor the implementation of investment projects and review and assess high quality tourism sites and socio-economic infrastructure projects to ensure the efficiency of investment.
He also asked the province to strive to develop the island district in a sustainable manner with focus on its World Biosphere Reserve which has been recognized by UNESCO recently.
An art performance, the largest of its kind in Phu Quoc was held after the ceremony.
