(CPV) - Mr Eberhard van der Laan, Mayor of Amsterdam, is leading a business delegation to Hanoi from December 8th – 11th to deeper cooperation in fields such as urban planning, water management, energy and waste treatment.
These “green metropolitan solutions” can be beneficial for both sides as the two cities confront similar challenges regarding climate change and economic growth. Learning from each other is crucial to further sustainable development.
“It is important that growth and urban development are planned well. Traffic, water and pollution. If a city fails to get these areas right, it will threaten the city’s most important condition for prosperity: its attractiveness to people and businesses,” said Mayor Van der Laan during a roundtable conference titled “The benefits of planning and investment for a prosperous and sustainable metropolis” held in Hanoi on December 9th.

A Memorandum of Understanding is also expected to ink to build prosperous and livable cities. Vietnam and the Netherlands enjoy close diplomatic ties, which will be the topic of a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, who also paid a visit to Amsterdam recently.
The Hanoi – Amsterdam high school of the gifted is the scene of the opening of an exhibition on Anne Frank on December 10th, also world Human Rights Day. Mayor Van der Laan will meet young students on the heritage of Anne Frank’s war diary, relate the message of peace to the story of Vietnamese heroic martyr – doctor Dang Thuy Tram, and the speak with alumni who studied in Amsterdam or studied urban planning in the Netherlands.
Last year, bilateral trade between Vietnam and the Netherlands amounted to EUR2.67 billion while the Netherlands remains one of Vietnam’s top European investment partners. So far, around 120 Dutch companies are active in the nation./.
