— Vietnam will tighten budget spending for public and state management jobs in 2015, according to Minister and Chairman of the Government Office, Nguyen Van Nen.


— The newly-appointed U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, Ted Osius, had his first visit in his term to Ho Chi Minh City and Ben Thanh Market yesterday. He served as Political Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City and at the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi from 1996 to 1998.


— Hanoi has banned state officials from going on overseas trips using corporate money.

— A fire blazed up yesterday morning, killing all six members of a family in the northern city of Hai Phong.


— The operator of Mien Dong (Eastern) Bus Station, which is the departure venue of bus routes to the eastern, central, and northern regions of Vietnam, said bus ticket prices will go up by 20-60 percent during the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival to come in less than two months.


— Typhoon Jangmi with the wind power at the storm center blowing at 62-74kph will likely enter the East Vietnam Sea on January 1, according to the Central Hydrometeorology Center.


— Authorities of Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta have approved the construction of a bridge for pedestrians only to connect Ninh Kieu Wharf with Cai Khe Islet. The 200m long and 7.2m wide bridge is estimated to VND50 billion (US$2.4 million).


— Nine ships illegally exploiting sand at sea around Con Ngua Islet, five miles from the Vung Tau coast, were held yesterday. The ships have the loading capacity of 500 to 1,200 tonnes.

— Hau Giang Province in the Mekong Delta has sponsored 183 medicine and pharmacy students to go to college at a total sum of VND8.5 billion ($408,700). In return, they will commit to return to work at public clinics of the province after graduation.


— The Ministry of Education and Training has instructed its bodies to ban smoking and the sale of beer and alcoholic drinks in schools, dormitories, and educational offices.
