— State President Truong Tan Sang has sent a congratulatory message to all Vietnamese people on the threshold of the new year. In the message, he stressed the need to further boost the country’s socio-economic growth, defend the country’s sovereignty, and tap into average people’s solidarity.

— Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has just given his nod to a proposal from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to incorporate a monument to late President Ho Chi Minh in Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam’s Kien Giang Province into a planning project of the president’s monuments. The planning is expected to last until 2030.


— Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Finance told a Wednesday meeting that the city’s total budget revenue reached VND252.2 trillion (US$11.87 billion), a 11.39% year-on-year increase. The city’s domestic budget revenue is VND131.3 trillion ($6.18 billion), up 10.68% compared to last year.


— An official of HCMC Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, reported at a Wednesday meeting that homeless beggars have scattered to the city’s suburban districts. 161 beggars are currently receiving care in social welfare centers, pending residence identification and categorization. On December 28, city authorities initiated a program to group beggars into state-run homes.

— According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP), Vietnam’s aquatic product export turnover reaches $7.9 billion in 2014, up $900 million compared to schedule.


— Gas companies throughout HCMC on Wednesday afternoon announced that retail gas prices will be cut by VND33,000 ($1.55) for each 12-kilogram cylinder from Thursday on compared to early December 2014.


— Chair of Binh Dinh People’s Committee in central Vietnam said on Wednesday his province is looking to grant a permit to the Nhon Hoi (Victory) Oil Refinery Project in the first quarter of 2015.


— Quang Ngai People’s Committee also in central Vietnam has granted a permit on the $1.8 billion expansion project on Dung Quat Oil Refinery Plant.

— Thousands of people on New Year’s Eve flocked to downtown streets in Hanoi, HCMC and elsewhere across the country to usher in the New Year 2015 and join a myriad of celebratory activities, including spectacular fireworks and light shows.

— Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, an outstanding Vietnamese swimmer, has won the 2014 poll on best athletes, which was organized by The Thao Vietnam (Vietnam Sports) Newspaper. The 18-year-old girl bagged an exceptional accolade in 2014, including a bronze medal in the women’s 400m individual medley event of the 17th Asian Games (Asiad), the first-ever medal for Vietnam’s swim team in Asiad’s history. Weightlifting coach Huynh Huu Chi has earned the title of the year’s best coach in the same poll.
