Climate Change is one of the major challenges facing mankind, because of its severe impact on people’s lives all over the world. Women, vulnerable objects in the community, need being paid attention in the policies related to gender equality issue in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
The necessity to pay attention to women in the plan of coping, preventing and reducing disaster risk in localities
For Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu, Head of the Women’s Association in Phu An village (Hoa An commune, Phu Hoa district), the phrase “climate change response and disaster risk prevention” are not vague, but present in everyday life through the weather changes of rain, sun, unusual flood or storm; especially, since the UN Organization on gender equality and empowering women deployed the plan “Improving women’s ability to cope with climate change: Empowering women at the foundations to respond to natural disasters” in Hoa An commune.
In the meetings both monthly and quarterly, through the club “Sustainable Family”, “Family with 5 things not to do, 3 clean things to do” …, the contents of preventing natural disaster risk, responding to climate changes has been always combined to propagate. Ms. Thu excitedly said, “Up to now, women all over the locality have known what to do before, during and after disasters. They practice very well during the rainy season, along with their families, communities reducing to a minimum loss of life and property as disaster strikes”.
Head of Women Union in Hoa An commune, Ms. Tran Thi Kim Hoa, lets known: “Raising awareness for women in particular and for the public in general in the tasks of coping, preventing natural disasters is always paid attention by the communal government as well as Women’s Union. Currently, women have alerted, actively coped with climate change, adapted to climate change, effectively participated in the disaster risk mitigation. Currently, I am an official member in the Steering Committee for Flood Prevention-Searching and Rescuing locally, therefore, the recommendations and requirements by women have always been concerned, listened to and resolved”.
“Not only in Hoa An commune, in other locations in the province, the Women Union at all levels also worked closely with the localities to advocate so as to raise the awareness for women”, Vice President of the Provincial Women’s Union, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong said. Besides the Women’s Union at all levels, the Red Cross in the province has participated in the aforementioned tasks during the last 5 years. Vice Chairman of the Provincial Red Cross, Mr. Le The Minh, let known: “Through the projects of Disaster Risk Reduction and Against Flood funded by the Norwegian Red Cross and the German Red Cross, respectively, for localities at high risk of natural disasters in the province, the Red Cross has organized several training sessions of coping with climate change for local governments as well as women in 15 communes and wards in the districts of Tuy An, Tay Hoa, Dong Hoa and Tuy Hoa city. Also, supplying the knowledge on climate change and the adverse effects of climate change for women has been always paid attention, because women are an important human resource in planning to implement mitigation measures, adaptation to natural disasters in the community and higher levels. They themselves maintain and promote behavior, habits, cultural features in preventing from natural disasters among local people.
