Havana (La Habana), the capital of Cuba, is among the 7 finalists in New7Wonders Cities (N7WC). N7WC Founder-President, Bernard Weber, announced the 7 cities finalists on December 8th in Munich. The seven cities were chosen based on voting from people using the Internet, smartphone apps, international telephone voting lines and text messaging. The other cities declared in the N7WC were Beirut, Lebanon; Doha, Qatar; Durban, South Africa; Vigan, the Philippines; Kuala Kumpur, Malaysia; and La Paz, Bolivia. The N7WC campaign began in 2011 with more than 1,200 nominees from 220 different countries. It was later narrowed down to 21 nominees, and later 14 finalists, until the seven cities were declared winners. N7WC, the third global vote organized by New7Wonders aims to contribute to the protection of the world’s human-built and natural heritage and foster respect for the planet’s diversity. N7WC Founder-President Bernard Weber in a statement said the New7Wonders Cites will now join the New7Wonders of Nature and the New7Wonders of the World in becoming part of global memory. In 2007, the New7Wonders of the World winners were: Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro of Brazil; the Great Wall of China, the ancient city of Petra, Jordan; the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, Peru; the pyramid of Chichen Itza, Mexico; the Colosseum of Italy and the Taj Mahal of India. The New7Wonders of Nature are: the Amazon of South America, Ha Long bay of Vietnam, Iguazu falls between Brazil and Argentina, Jeju island of the Republic of Korea, Komodo of Indonesia, the Puerto Princesa underground river of the Philippines and Table mountain of South Africa./. |
