Mexico enters OIF as observer

Mexico has joined the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), as an Observer State.


The OIF, known informally and more commonly as La Francophonie (or, more simply, Francophonie) is an international organization representing countries and regions where French is the first or customary language


The OIF is responsible for coordinating international cooperation between its member states and governments. Linguistic and cultural diversity and universal values such as peace, democracy and human rights, as well as sustainable development, are the ties that bind these states together within the OIF.


Along with Mexico, Costa Rica and Kosovo were also added as the Observers of the OIF.


The OIF’s members include European and African countries whose official language is French. Asian, Middle Eastern and even Latin American countries, such as Uruguay, the Dominican Republic and now Mexico and Costa Rica are all members or observers..


As an Observer, Mexico will be part of an organization for dialogue and consensus of 900 million people (220 million Francophones) that extends from Europe to Africa and the Middle-East and from Asia to the Americas and the Caribbean.


With the organisations Secretary-General, Abdou Diouf, stepping down after 10 years in office. The summit members elected Michelle Jean as his replacement for an initial 4-year term at the summit in Dakar, Senagal.


The OIF Summit is held every two years, with the first taking place in 1986 in France. Vietnam hosted the 7th OIF Summit in 1997.


The 16th OIF Summit is set for 2016 in Madagascar./.
